Gringo Colombres “Playing with people you trust and enjoy being around makes all the difference”

Raúl “Gringo” Colombres, a key player in Clearwater’s recent victory in the Julio Novillo Astrada Cup, has proven himself indispensable to the team’s success. Colombres played a pivotal role in Clearwater’s 10-9 win over Forbes Plunkett in the thrilling final at La Aguada Polo Club. Despite a challenging start, with Clearwater trailing 5-0 early on, Colombres and his teammates mounted an impressive comeback, ultimately clinching victory in overtime.

Colombres’ connection with Clearwater began two years ago and has since blossomed into a formidable partnership. Playing alongside Chip Campbell, Paco de Narváez, and Joaquín Panelo, Colombres has been instrumental in shaping the team’s competitive edge. This season, their chemistry was evident as they tackled La Aguada’s most prestigious tournaments, blending skill, and resilience to secure the title.

-Gringo, how was the final?

"It was incredible. They started well, 5-0 ahead, and little by little, we tried to catch up. We never quite got there, and in the last chukker, they were beating us by two with a minute and a half left. Luckily, we scored two quick goals, and then overtime was anyone’s game."

-You never lost hope, right? You never gave up on the match?

"No, no, no, no, because we were close, so we thought it was always possible. We missed a lot of goals, but they were also a very good team, well-mounted. So honestly, it’s always good to know you shouldn’t give up until the very end."

-Well, tell me about your team. Who did you play with?

"We played with Chip Campbell, Joaquín Panelo, and Paquito de Narváez."

-What’s the team dynamic like?

"Yeah, well, we came to play this tournament. Chip came from the United States to test some horses, and with this team, we’re going to play the USPA Gold Cup of the U.S. Open in the United States. So, we came here to play together a bit and try to build some chemistry."

-A promising start!

"It is. We had a good streak of luck, but obviously, winning always helps."

-And playing here at La Aguada, in such a traditional cup?

"I had never played this tournament before, so obviously, we’re super happy. I know it’s a cup with a lot of tradition and prestige, so we’re all very pleased. Chip also had a great time, the fields were amazing, and the organization was perfect. An incredible tournament, and hopefully, we’ll be back next year."
