California Polo Season to Take Off at Twin Palms

California is a vibrant hub for polo in the United States, with several clubs contributing to its year-round appeal. The Winter season in California begins in late December, making it one of the first regions to welcome players back to the field well before the Florida season gains momentum. Among these clubs is the Twin Palms Polo Club, which joins other venues in Thermal and beyond to create a dynamic environment for polo enthusiasts and competitors.

Twin Palms Polo Club, founded in 2005, offers picturesque views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and is well-equipped to support the fast-paced, open-play polo that characterizes the California winter season. Owned by Chris Maloney, Twin Palms features a top-tier field, a 48-stall barn, and an exercise track, designed to support the exciting Pro-Am tournaments scheduled from January to March. The upcoming season includes two USPA circuit events, adding to the club's competitive calendar.

The winter season at Twin Palms kicks off with its Season Kick-Off Bash on January 4th, leading into a line-up of tournaments that includes the Welcome Tournament, Agave Cup, and Medjool Cup. These events and USPA-sanctioned tournaments like the Sportsmanship Cup and Officers Cup showcase the rich, community-oriented polo that defines California’s winter season.

In the interview below, Mia Bray, Polo Manager at Twin Palms, shares insights into the club’s place within the broader California polo scene, the community atmosphere, and what players and fans can look forward to in the coming season that makes California a premier destination for polo.

-Mia, can you tell us the story of the club?

"The Twin Palms Polo Club was built in 2005, with the inaugural game played in 2006. The original Twin Palms league was a Pro-Am, similar to what we're aiming to recreate now. It was fast, fun, and competitive polo, paired with legendary parties. When the club faced possible closure in 2008, its current owner, Chris Maloney, stepped in to preserve the fields, facility, and league. Tournaments have been on hold as Chris and the management focused on other ventures, but in 2025, we’re thrilled to reopen the club with the Twin Palms Invitational."

-There are other important clubs in California whose seasons ensure polo is played year-round. Do you have relationships with other clubs, and where does the club stand within the polo scene in the state?

"California is unique for its year-round polo potential, thanks to beautiful weather. The Coachella Valley is a winter polo destination with its famous 350 days of sunshine. When it gets warmer here, players can move to coastal clubs, which offer extended seasons. Chris Maloney is also revitalizing polo in San Diego County with Rancho Agave, our sister club, which will open in the spring of 2025 with more medium-goal polo options."

-You host several USPA-sanctioned events. Which are the most important for the club?

"We’re especially excited for the USPA Sportsmanship Cup and Officer’s Cup. The USPA does an excellent job supporting clubs like Twin Palms with these important Circuit Events. The Steve Maloney Memorial, held in March, is also significant as it has a special place in Chris's heart."

-Could you tell us more about the Pro-Am tournaments scheduled from January to March?

"The Twin Palms Invitational Pro-Am takes inspiration from the league that started in 2006. We aim to promote safe but competitive polo with 4-8 goal Pro-Am tournaments, rotating teams every two weeks. Each week includes a practice and two tournament matches. It’s a fast, open style of play with a strong focus on sponsor participation and camaraderie. This setup allows sponsors to join with their horses and pro players, playing three months of exciting polo with varied competitors. The rotating team structure keeps the season fresh and engaging."

-How would you describe the atmosphere and community at Twin Palms during the Winter season?

"I’m excited to rebuild the community spirit this season. The gates of Twin Palms have been closed for several years, so we’re looking forward to filling the 48-stall barn and turnouts, especially with friends from Klentner Ranch. Seeing the activity and energy around the barns will be amazing and will bring back the excitement. Twin Palms has a family atmosphere; it’s where I grew up alongside friends who are now professionals."

-The location in Thermal, with views of the Santa Rosa Mountains, adds a unique touch to the club. How do you think this setting enhances the experience for visitors?

"It truly is a picture-perfect setting. Standing on green grass in the sunshine with the beautiful mountains in view, especially with a fresh layer of snow, is unbeatable."

-Are there any special plans for the Twin Palms Season Kick-Off Bash or other events that add to the season’s excitement?

"We’re excited to kick off the season with a Welcome Bash on opening weekend to establish a fun, close-knit atmosphere. In the original Pro-Am League, the costume parties were a huge hit, so we may see something similarly exciting for a later tournament!"

-Finally, what are your hopes for this Winter season at Twin Palms? Are there specific highlights you’re looking forward to?

"Our goal is to recreate the spirit of the original Twin Palms League—fast polo, great parties, and fun for all players. Given the strong interest in the league, I’m confident others share this vision, and there’s real potential for growth. We’re also making facility renovations to prepare for this season and future events. I look forward to spending my winters at Twin Palms with Chris, Graham, and our players."
